BlackBerry Z10 : The Essential Tools

I have been using the BlackBerry Z10 for over two months now. My sentiments have been from returning it on day three to kind of starting to like it. My previous phone was a BB 9900 Bold Touch.

The BlackBerry Link software is useless. It does nothing to sync my contacts, calendars, notes etc. Its just used to sync documents, media et, something that I have little use for.

For syncing the essentials (Contacts, Calendars, Mail etc), I used the iCould BB Sync as detailed here.

(I personally moved my contacts vi BB Protect, Calendars via iCloud).

Once the basic essentials are in place, I looked for the next: Maps. Blackberry gives away the detailed, turn by turn voice guided,  awesome MapMyIndia Maps for free. The BB Z10 already has a fantastic office documents suite for viewing and editing. For messaging there is BBM as well as WhatsApp.

One must also get the free BlackBerry Travel for World Clock, Currency, Flight Status, Weather etc.

The BB Z10 doesnt have a note taking software. So I got CherryNotes. Its not free, but its inexpensive and fabulous. It can save your notes on your BB or on DropBox.

For GPS tracking, I got OnTrail. Its something Ihave been missing ever since I moved from the 9900 (which had support for the eMacBerry GPS Logger II).

For international news, theres the fabulous New York Times app.

For task management, there is Remember The Milk.

These got me going!

Blackberry OS 7.1 with Mobile WiFi HotSpot support

Blackberry has released their OS 7.1. The best part for us was support for Mobile WiFi hotspot. Now you can use your BB as a mobile WiFi Hotspot for upto 5 devices (of course you will have to get the right data plan from your carrier first).

Grocery List for Blackberry

GroceryList is simple and efficient even for large inventories. The two primary things you do with it are add items to the list for your next shopping trip and go shopping with the list.

Adding to the list is quick because you don’t re-type items you’ve added in the past. In the search box, you just start typing any part of the item you want to add. The list of matching items that appears will shrink quickly as you type until you are left with just a few or possibly just one item to select from. Items already on the list will be in black. Items not yet on the list will be greyed-out.

ReelPortal for Video Chat

Finally there seems to be a decent Video Chat App for Blackberry Playbook.

What is ReelPortal?

ReelPortal is an easy-to-use video chat and conference system.  ReelPortal is intentionally designed for a future where small, efficient, yet powerful video-capable computing devices are ubiquitous inside every home and office, replacing the traditional telephone.  As such, these devices will always be on, and serve as standard communication tools between users, regardless of their physical location.

ReelPortal users can call each other directly via their nicknames, which can be anything of their choosing (given name, phone number, etc).  Just like the traditional telephone, there is no need to log in with an account and password to place a call.  So how would the callee identify the caller, you may ask.  Like the traditional telephone, ReelPortal assumes the callee can identify the caller by voice, and perhaps by their face.

Beyond the calling aspect, ReelPortal users can opt to create a unique private room, where they can invite friends and family to join for a multi-way video conference.  Users joining a room need only to know the room name, and room key (if any).  Once in, they are automatically connected to everyone in that room.  Thus, there is no need to even know the nicks of the participants.  Again, the participants are identified by their voice and face. Users may adopt a personal room as their own, where friends and family can join and check whether they are available.

Within the home or office, ReelPortal can also serve as an active, local video intercom system.  But with an adequate internet connection, this system can be extended globally, effortlessly.  Starting a conversation would be just a click away.  As an intercom system, ReelPortal maintains connections between devices indefinitely, with fault-tolerant logic to detect and retry any broken connection.  With this capability, users can move in and out of networks (3G/WiFi) with minimal disruptions.
