VLOG for Symbian for editing Maps

(text from the vlog website)

Now you should not search for a map before going to an unknown city.
The program will load maps through the Internet worldwide.
The source of maps - openstreetmap.com. On this site any owner of the GPS-receiver can draw maps of his own district.

The program is written under Symbian (version 9.2 OS, Series 60 3-rd Edition Feature Pack 1)
and checked while only on my phone Nokia N95.
Therefore I can say nothing about compatibility with other devices

Plans:
1. Add mapping POI (Points Of Interest) – drugstores, shops, the gas station etc.
2. Add routing.
3. Write version for Windows Mobile.
4. To make interaction with a site gpslog.org on record, storage, an exchange of tracks and coordinates, and also to tracking objects.

Musician : a tool for musicians

What is it?

m1m2

Musician: A musician’s tool. I wanted a tuner for my guitar and violin, plus a metronome to start songs off at the right tempo, and the current S60 programs just didn’t work. Hence Musician. It was also created as my very first Python program (see the notes below).

There are polyphonic tuning tones for E, B, G, D and A, enough to tune both guitar and violin. The tones last for a configurable length of time. The metronome will display beats at any tempo from 50 to 220 beats per minute, with an optional ‘metronome’ sound sample. And a playable mini-piano will let you play out simple melodies.

Musician :Download it now for Symbian OS/S60 3rd Edition
(e.g. Nokia E61, N73, N93, N95…)

Download the latest v3.2 here as musician32.zip (39K). Please read the notes in the Readme.txt file about first needing to install the latest version of the Python interpreter on your smartphone. See below!

This version of Musician works with QVGA (320 by 240) or 352×416 pixel displays. This covers the vast majority of S60 3rd Edition devices, but NOT the N91 or E90. Yet.

MicroCalc : Free J2ME Spreadsheet

MicroCalc is a spreadsheet aplication for java enabled devices, such as mobile phones and PDA.

MicroCalc midlet is freeware for individual use. But we may charge a fee in future for using MC network server to synchronize your data between phone and PC.

MicroCalc download
The current version of Microcalc (MC) is 0.7.8 (updated 17 Nov 2004). It’s available in several packages:

* basic package for general j2me enabled device: microcalc.jad & microcalc.jar. No additional midlets are included into the package, size under 32k.
* package for Siemens phones (includes export utility to SYLK file): microcalc45sylk.jad & microcalc45sylk.jar.
* MicroCalc Lite: microcalclite.jad & microcalclite.jar – the same as basic package with some features removed to keep jar file size within 30k. Use this on Nokia 3590, 6310, or any other that cannot run the basic package because of midlet size limitation.

Basic package can be obtained from www.handango.com (for free). More →

Nokia E71 : What I didnt like

I was on the lookout for a Nokia E61 upgrade and when the E71 first showed up at sites like e-series.org and engadgetmobile, I was thrilled. So I got myself one, soon as it was available and soon as I could afford it.

Connecting it to the Mac for iSync and using as a tethered modem was as easy as expected.

Get the compatible iSync plugin from Nokia

The E71 looks drop-dead gorgeous and works amazingly well too! You will find tonnes of reviews of this phone on the net, so I am just writing what I am missing, after having a two year stint with the E61.

*) When making a call the ‘Loudspeaker’ function is not enabled until the called phone starts ringing. Its really annoying. On my E61, I would often dial a number, immediately put it on the loudspeaker and wait for the other person to pick up the phone.

*) I miss the first bracket keys and the exclamation key was better on ‘Q’ than on the ‘?’ key. I could type really fast on the E61′s expanded keyboard layout, but no more! In short I really really loved the keyboard layout of the E61. Please give it back to me.

*) There’s something with the font of the OS. Somehow, it seems to be taking a lot of screen real estate. Even setting it at smallest doesnt seem quiet right.

*) the QuickOffice 4.x.x that comes with the E71 doesnt support charts and graphs, a feature I miss terribly from the the E61′s spreadsheet program.

*) GPS is a fun feature that I have been toying with. A more detailed review of that soon. I tried Nokia Maps, and in two different locations, I saved my locations. Then I asked Nokia Maps to show me the way. It was bang-on accurate for most of the way except towards the end it asked me to take a steep left, which left me baffled, since the left would have taken me AWAY from my destination, which I could see was some 200 meters straight in front of me!

Nokia Maps uploader alternative

Nokia Map Loader only works on Windows, needs .net framework, and if you add a new map the map loader deletes all your existing maps so you’ll have to download them all over again.

But you don’t need Nokia Map Loader. This site links to all maps on Nokia’s smart2go server. Works with any browser on any operating system, including Mac and Linux. No need to install anything on your computer, so it works when you’re in a hotel, school, at work, or in an internet cafe.
If your phone talks WiFi or 3G you can add and update maps from your phone’s web browser without even touching a computer.

You can download maps for entire continents, individual countries, or individual regions within some countries. Download sizes range from one megabyte (Gibraltar) to over a gigabyte (europe or america). You’ll need a 4 GB card to fit the entire planet. Map coverage for western countries is quite good, maps for commercially less attractive parts of the world tend to contain lots of white space.
