Callwave is a widget that lets you send free international text messages from your Mac desktop. At the moment it lets you send upto 10 free messages, but if you want more, you can buy more international SMS credits. Some users’ contracts may charge for receiving the messages. 

There is no limit for messages sent in the USA and Canada. I wish they had a widget/J2ME app for my phone as well! International texing is so expensive! You will, of course, need a working internet connection on your desktop to be able to send the messages.
